Useful tips for applying for the Shell LiveWIRE programme!

Hi everyone,

Over the years, a lot of our award applicants have used this forum to post tips and advice on applying for a Shell LiveWIRE award. We have compiled these tips here to help you ensure you put in a brilliant application. If you are an applicant, or have applied in the past and have some tips to offer, please post them here!

Remember that even if your application is unsuccessful, you can request feedback on your application and apply again.

Here are a few tips to help get you started!

The written application:
  • The word count is limited. To make sure you say everything you need to, avoid jargon and vague statements and get straight to the material facts.
  • If appropriate for the question type, quote statistics and numbers to support your answer.
  • Ensure your application is written professionally, using correct spelling and grammar, and presented neatly with appropriate capitalisation and with a business tone.
  • Emphasise how your business meets the energy and resource needs of a fast-growing population. Read the eligibility criteria and award categories carefully, and make sure that your solution is clear in the application. If youíre unsure whether youíre eligible or not, feel free to email or phone the office.

The elevator pitch video:

The elevator pitch video is often the part applicants are most nervous about. After being shortlisted, applicants must produce a one-minute elevator pitch to be published on the Shell LiveWIRE website. From there, members of the public can vote for their favourite. The person to receive the most online votes will have 5 points added to their overall judgesí score, with the next highest receiving 4 additional points, and so on. Sometimes the additional points can mean the difference between winning an award and not, so itís important that your video pitch is as good as it can be.
  • Like any elevator pitch, you will need to be clear, succinct and to the point. Try to use memorable words, but steer clear of jargon or technical words that might hamper your listenerís understanding.
  • Make sure your listeners want to listen to you Ė try to hook them in and keep them engaged.
  • Make sure you are talking about your product/service, but also remember that you are selling point of your business as well Ė sell yourself as well as your product/service. If you have a product, itís good to show it. Similarly, if you have a service, give your viewers a snapshot of it in action if you can.
  • Think about audio and video quality. Your pitch doesnít have to be professionally produced, but good quality videos tend to succeed over grainy webcam clips.
  • Consider being a bit creative with animation and text. This is especially useful if you donít have good quality audio equipment.
  • Most importantly, though, practice!

If you are unsuccessful, please remember that you can receive feedback on your application, which we would encourage you to take on board and consider when reapplying for an award. Our judges are entrepreneurs and business experts themselves, and the feedback is often one of the most useful parts of the programme. Many businesses have to reapply one or two times before winning, so donít feel disheartened!
