The Building Workshop Workspace Case Study
Ben and Rosemary Scrimgeour of The Building
Workshop talk about the importance of a good workspace when first starting out
in business. Ben and Rosemary won a Shell LiveWIRE Award in 2010.
We have our office in an old converted cow shed at Rosemary's family home. It is a great space for creativity, with a custom made work bench and lots of natural daylight. As a start-up company, it is vital to keep our running costs as low as possible, but now that we are hoping to start employing people, we are keen to have a bigger office with all of the necessary facilities. We also use our website, Facebook, BlogSpot and Twitter as workspaces - they are a great platform for our work as we can easily post pictures of our projects.
Now in our second year as a business, we have secured planning permission to build ourselves a home and bigger office which will show our clients our style and attention to detail. As an architecture practice, it will be a great asset to have offices and a home designed and built by us, to showcase our work. For us, the most important thing when designing our future office was that it should be flooded with soft north light, have plenty of room for design space, laying out our work, and lots of storage space for models and files. Our office and home will be heated using renewable energy sources and will be super insulated, which will increase our productivity in the cold Scottish winters!
