Karina Sudenyte won January’s Shell LiveWIRE Smarter Future Award for her business, Wonky Drinks.
At least a third of produce grown globally is thrown away due to its size or shape. Overproduction leads to further increases in the level of food waste. Moreover, half of that wasted food is edible. Wonky Drinks is a social enterprise that aims to tackle food waste, reduce packaging waste and help orchards that can't shift wonky produce. The business squeezes juice from wonky produce and is on a mission to create the most sustainable juice brand in Europe. Wonky Drinks do not contain any GMOs or additives such as sugar, powders, or oils. Intended for the catering market, university and workplace canteens, Wonky Drinks are packaged in five-litre boxes together with a branded smoothie tumbler. It replaces between 15 and 25 plastic bottles and cuts packaging waste by 70%.
Commiserations to Haydn Kirkman (Airshare Transfers), Sam Rogers (Braw Power), Ehab Sayed (Biohm) and Rebecca Sloan (Piddle Patch) who were shortlisted but did not win this time and are encouraged to reapply.
