News | Spotlight on September's Shell LiveWIRE Smarter Future Programme winner, Alex Bond, co-founder of Fresh Check
24 November 2016
Alex Bond won a Shell LiveWIRE Smarter Future Award in September 2016 for his business, Fresh Check.
Fresh Check has developed a chemical that changes from blue to orange in the presence of bacteria, allowing users to identify areas that are dangerously contaminated. This has been incorporated into a label that sits inside food packaging which changes colour when food has actually spoiled. 1.3 billion tonnes of food is wasted around the world each year; one of the major causes of this wastage is the disposal of food that is still fit for consumption, despite what is indicated on the use-by date. The Fresh Check smart label provides a direct readout of food quality by monitoring the level of bacteria present in food and changing colour from blue to orange when it reaches a dangerous level.
The business has also developed a spray version that can allow people to confirm the cleanliness of surfaces where cleanliness is paramount.
